Burnout

Burnout is defined as a syndrome characterised by a collection of symptoms, generally feeling physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted. Even though burnout is usually relating to work, we can experience it in a home setting also. It occurs when we are faced with long term stress and pressure.

Some of the problems associated with burnout are:

  • insomnia

  • high blood pressure

  • lowered immunity leading to frequent illness

  • loss of appetite or overeating

  • feeling demotivated, loss of interest and enjoyment

  • procrastinating behaviours

  • withdrawing from people or responsibilities

  • decreased productivity, lateness at work

  • irritability

  • depression

Treatment for burnout involves identifying sources of stress and developing resources to increased our capacity to deal with life pressures (whether from work or from home).

We respond to situations we don’t react to situations.
