Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse is a repeated pattern of behaviours that occurs when a relationship or family member attempts to physically and / or psychologically dominate another.
Domestic abuse takes different forms and can be physical, emotional, verbal, financial, sexual or controlling behaviour.
Some of the problems associated with domestic abuse or effects of it are:
physical: chronic pain, sleep disturbances, unplanned pregnancy, STD-s, paralysis, death
psychological: depression, low self-esteem, trauma related with sexual abuse, anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia, self-harm, suicidal thoughts
social: poverty, exclusion, homelesness
Domestic violence can be:
Criminal: physical and sexual abuse, stalking and coercive control
Emotional and Financial abuse are not criminal behaviours, but they are recognised forms of abuse that can lead to criminal violence
Estimates are that in Ireland only about a third of cases of domestic abuse are reported.
If you’re experiencing domestic abuse, know that IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. Nothing justifies abusive behaviours, no matter what you’re being told.
Protection, Safety and Barring Orders are available from the District Family Law Court for people experiencing domestic abuse in Ireland.
If you don’t feel safe at home or if you are in danger, please call An Garda Siochana: 112 or 999.
